TAKE HOME POINTS FROM DR PHIL BOUCHER

  1. Know when to place the needs of your spouse or children above your own and when to prioritize your own self care. This is an important distinction that often does not come naturally. We learn as we go. How do I want to make my families’ life better in this situation? Another good question to ask yourself at the moment I will borrow from my dear friends Dr. Alexandra Stockwell who recently came to speak with my Women Physicians coaching group. She offers to ask ourselves, what does everyone in this family need right now, including me?
    1. Example: Dinner, TV, bedtime, alone time, reconnection time
    2. When I am overwhelmed, angry, and victimize myself, I have learned that all I need is often 10-15 minutes to reset...take a shower, think about why I am really feeling the way I feel and a moment to take ownership for my feelings instead of blaming them on someone else.
  2. Do not wait for someone else to make your life more efficient. If you crave efficiency and you notice wasted time at work, suggest a solution. Remember not to focus on the problem as in any negotiation. Present two best options to your group. If neither option is adopted, create one for yourself. Templates...a scribe, get creative, find alternative methods. This won’t happen overnight.
    1. Make a list of your shared values
    2. Family Time
    3. Home
    4. Experiences
    5. Material Items
    6. Charity
    7. Notice if your shared values support increased spending habits...if so figure out how to increase your salary.
    8. Evaluate what your variables can be shifted in your home to help align
    9. What variables can I shift to support my spending habits?
  3. Create shared values with your spouse.
    1. A Dream Home
    2. The Headboard
    3. The Luxury Car
  4. Examples: Time with family on weekends, annual couple only vacations, Grandparents

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • Do I have a good balance between self care and self sacrifice?
  • What can I delegate in my life?
  • How can my spouse and I create more shared visions?
  • Do my values support my spending habits?
